Design of shorted microstrip patch antenna array
Abstract
In wireless communication, the requirement of the portable device increased tremendously.
Portable devices have to be small as much possible. For that purpose, microstrip
patch antennas are used but as demand increases for the smaller devices
researchers look for the even smaller antenna than the microstrip patch antennas.
The need for smaller devices increases just because they are very easy to carry. Researchers
have found out many techniques for the size reduction of the microstrip
patch antennas.
Shorted microstrip patch antenna is one of the technique from it. In this technique,
shorting is done between patch and ground. This shorting is done where
the impedance is zero or minimum, i.e. at virtual short. By doing this, the half
part is discarded. So finally the size of the antenna is reduced to its half and resonant
frequency remains same. How and where the shorting is done is explained
in this thesis. Due to this shorting, size is reduced to its half but the gain is also
decreased.
To improve the gain, I have designed antenna array of shorted microstrip
patch antenna. Different configurations of the array are mentioned in this thesis.
Then I have gone for the fabrication of it. It also concludes the fabrication
results.
